One to One Tuition - Part Two

The second part of our One to One Session, (another fantastic workshop), Karen was helping our Student to achieve the textures that she wanted for this piece, she had seen a similar style in an art book she possessed and didn't know where to start to acheive the look she wanted, so with Karen's expertise our Student was able to move on with this piece.  I think the photos say it all, so I'll let them do the talking this time.  But suffice to say, this is still a work in progress so we will bring you more on this one to one after the next session.

One to One Tuition / Part One - Collage Background

It's been a busy week at The Little White Studios and it ended today with a fabulous one to one workshop creating texture in your collage background. Our student is currently attending some weekly sessions with Karen and I to learn how to create a collage on canvas using layering, texture, paint and drawing.

This piece is very much a work in progress as it will take several sessions to layer up the background to acheive the textured, effect that our student wants for her piece.  We began by covering the canvas with old music sheet paper and book pages, and then building up texture with Modge Podge before adding paint and then more ephemera and yet more paint.  Stamped flourishes were added to create even more texture!!

The canvas was really starting to take shape, the next step was to create an Angel as the main focus of her piece.  This was gently sketched and then filled randomly with white acrylic paint, in preparation for the angels features and more textures which will be added later.

But time got carried away with us and we had to end the creative morning, so this is still very much a work in progress, we have several sessions to go yet before this piece will be complete, however, I thought you may like to share my Students journey with her and watch her canvas develop week by week.

This is how we ended todays session, lots of lovely rich paint and texture, but still a long way to go before it resembles the finished piece she has in mind.  Check back next week to watch more of her creative journey.

Fabric, Paper, Scissors Taster Day

Oh what a fabulous day we had on Friday when we held our first Taster Day, here are a few pictures of the day and The Studio.  Each participant made a collage using pretty papers, ephemera, vintage lace, buttons and trim, and of course a vintage image.

The Studio was stocked to the brim with additional goodies incase any participant wanted to add to their piece, or stock up themselves for future creations.  The shelves were full of jars containing old buttons, gems, rusty keys and vintage findings.

Vintage lace that has been washed and pressed was available to buy in lengths and also bags of lace scraps.  And many tools were available to use if participants required other implements other than those they brought along in their "Tool Kits".

Backing papers, handmade papers and collage sheets were also available to browse through for inspiration or purchase for a future project.

And of course there were pieces of Little White Studio Art at every turn for more inspiration and creative loveliness.

Break time was a work of art in itself, with scrumptious Cherry & Vanilla Cupcakes supplied by Karens Daughter-in-Law, who is an artist of the culinary kind.

But the order of the day was create, create, create, and everyone was busy either sticking, cutting, positioning and admiring.  You could feel the creative energy in the room.

Here is one of our participants pleased as punched with her finished collage.  She is returning next week to commence some weekly workshops to create a canvas incorporating collage skills she learnt today along with paint this time.... oh fun times ahead I'm sure.

Only One Week to go!!!

Gosh how time flies, it's only one week to go now till the first Taster Day at The Little White Studios, and Karen and I are so excited to welcome our first guests through the doors.  There are still places available for anyone who may be able to make next week, but if you are interested in attending but the date doesn't work for you, please do contact us by email as we will be holding future Taster Days throughout the remainder of 2012.

The Workshop Studio is looking fabulous and a sneek peek of the Studio will be shown in a post next week.  We were both working from the Studio today stocking the shelves with supplies and displaying beautiful pieces of art on the walls for bags of inspiration for our guests, so be sure to drop by the Blog next week for the unveiling!

Collage will be a big part of our first few workshops, but future classes will cover a variety of other topics and these will be highlighted here as we move through the Autumn of 2012.  We are also having an Open Studio in October where visitors will be able to purchase handmade items and also view the Studio and see demonstrations, more details on this will be made available here within the next few weeks, so do check back often!

Creating for The Studio

Oh Karen and I had such fun last Friday creating a large canvas for the Studio Wall.  The previous evening I had designed a prototype in a small version on cardstock (see above), I loved creating this mixed media piece using ephemera, patterned papers, stamps, acrylics, lace, and rub ons.  The next day Karen and I discussed creating a similar design on a huge canvas as a fun piece to decorate the studio wall, so together we set about the task in hand, and below you can see a snapshot of our endeavours.

The background was a collection of old music sheet paper, patterned wrapping paper, brown paper,, scraps from an old book and a good washing of watered down acrylic paint.  The edges of the canvas were then aged using brown acrylic and tapped and rubbed in to give a mottled effect.  Different textures and patterns were painted on using household and everyday impliments that gave great effect, such as bubble wrap (see above).

Here Karen is working on the aged edge effect, it's lovely and messy, but such great fun!  These are some of the techniques that will be covered over the weekly two hour workshop sessions.

Below we have the background base from which we will add our little girl and then continue layering and embellishing till we've got the look just right.  The girl is created using old book pages, patterened paper and paint with rub-on and drawn on embellishments.

Here she is all cut out and positioned, now for the fun part, adding hair, skin tone, blush and embellishment to truly bring her to life....

Unfortunately we ran out of time and could not complete the full canvas, but we're nearly there, here's a sneek peek of the work in progress (below), we will meet again this Friday to add the final touches and I'll be sure to post the full canvas when it's all done.

Capturing Memories in Art

With only a few weeks to go until the first Taster Workshop, Karen and I are busy preparing the Studio, stocking it up with lots of lovely art and supplies in readiness to welcome our first guests.  The basic collage kits are now ready and waiting along with the  handouts to help you create your first basic collage.  Should you get bitten by the Collage bug then you may wish to sign up for the following six week course we are offering, during this time you will cover many exciting techniques, to include creating a Memory Collage using family ephemera. Naturally most of us are Keepers of our past hanging on to old love letters that have long turned yellow, precious old photos of those dear to us  -  all treasured pieces of our past.

Here are just a few examples of Memory pieces that I have created both for myself and clients. Memory Collages don't have to be restricted to Canvas or Cardstock, they can be created in many forms as Greetings Cards,  Memory Boxes and Paper Journals, the possibilities are endless.

So if you are signing up for the weekly courses then please start thinking about your Memory Piece and trawl through your loft and photo albums to collect together items to bring these memories alive again in Art!
